BODY DYSMORPHIA

Body dysmorphic disorder, or BDD, is a mental health condition where a person finds it hard to stop thinking about perceived flaws in their appearance.  Intrusive thoughts make a person with BDD obsess over perceived flaws they think are obvious even if those flaws are not noticeable to others at all.

Every person has insecurities about their bodies, however, a person with BDD has an obsession with a specific aspect of their appearance they results in behavior like avoiding mirrors, not wanting to go out in public, acne, scars, wrinkles and hair loss.

Every person has things about their bodies that they don’t like, however, BDD is an obsession.

Symptoms:

  • Being extremely preoccupied with a perceived flaw in appearance that to others can’t be seen or appears minor
  • The strong belief that you have a defect in your appearance that makes you ugly or deformed
  • The belief that others take special notice of your appearance in a negative way or mock you
  • Engaging in behaviors aimed at fixing or hiding the perceived flaw that is difficult to resist or control, such as frequently checking the mirror, grooming or skin picking
  • Attempting to hide perceived flaws with styling, makeup or clothes
  • Constantly comparing your appearance with others
  • Always seeking reassurance about your appearance from others
