What is Residential Mental Health Treatment?

Inpatient mental health treatment, or residential treatment, is an intensive therapeutic approach where clients reside on-site, enabling around-the-clock care in a tranquil environment. This form of care is essential for individuals struggling with complex mental health challenges that require consistent support, structure, and distance from everyday distractions.

At The Meadowglade, clients engage in a series of personalized therapies delivered by a multidisciplinary team, each session crafted to meet their unique needs.

Our approach to inpatient mental health treatment goes beyond symptom management. It involves addressing root causes, identifying unproductive thought patterns, and establishing coping mechanisms that clients can carry forward.

How Do I Know I Need Residential Mental Health Treatment?

Mental health disorders are relatively common in the US. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), “It is estimated that more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness (59.3 million in 2022; 23.1% of the U.S. adult population).”

Mental health disorders range in severity and symptoms. Some people can manage their symptoms with outpatient therapy or medications. However, others struggle with severe symptoms and need more intensive treatment.

Some indicators that you may need residential mental health treatment include:

  • Overwhelming Anxiety or Depression: When intense emotions make it hard to enjoy life or maintain responsibilities, a supportive and structured environment can provide relief.
  • Substance Use or Self-Medicating: Using substances to cope often signals a deeper need for therapeutic intervention.
  • Self-Harm or Suicidal Thoughts: Residential treatment offers a secure setting for those experiencing self-harm behaviors or thoughts of suicide, with immediate access to therapeutic support.
  • Diagnosis of Complex Disorders: Conditions like Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, or trauma-related disorders benefit from the depth and breadth of care provided by inpatient programs.
  • Frequent Relapses or Persistent Symptoms: Repeated attempts at outpatient therapy or self-help that do not bring lasting relief may indicate a need for a higher level of care.

Types of Mental Health Disorders We Treat

Mental health disorders primarily affect a person’s emotions and behaviors. Some people are genetically predisposed to developing one, whereas, others develop them due to poor coping skills for stressors and trauma. Oftentimes, both of these factors are at play.

Mental health disorders include a range symptoms like mood swings, poor impulse control, difficulty regulating emotions, hallucinations, delusional thinking, and odd or even reckless behaviors. Symptoms vary based on your diagnosis and personal experience with the disorder.

Our licensed and experienced team members offer an array of expertise to treat several types of disorders, including the following:

1
Anxiety Disorders:
Our therapies help clients develop healthy responses to anxiety triggers, reducing symptoms of social anxiety, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety.
2
Depression:
Through individualized treatment plans, we address underlying causes of depression and equip clients with tools to reclaim a sense of purpose and fulfillment..
3

6

7
Stress-Induced Disorders:
Stress is a part of everyday life. However, when stress is overwhelming over long periods of time, you may develop a stress-induced mental disorder.
8
Grief Disorder:
Everyone grieves on their own timeline and in their own way. But when grief never seems to go away and interferes with your life, you might have a grief disorder.
9
Eating Disorders:
Eating disorders are often rooted in emotional health issues, like low self-esteem and perfectionism. We treat several types of eating disorders at The Meadowglade.

Each program at The Meadowglade is built around the understanding that mental health disorders require individualized treatment plans.

How Long Does Residential Treatment in Los Angeles Last?

Residential treatment programs lasts about 30 days.

During this time, you’ll develop a foundation of knowledge and coping skills to help you long term. It’s important, though to continue treatment at the outpatient level. After residential treatment, you can return home or live in a transitional housing program as you continue outpatient treatment.

We offer the following types of outpatient programs at our Los Angeles mental health treatment center:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): This is the highest level of outpatient treatment available for mental health disorders. During a PHP program, you’ll attend a variety of sessions throughout the day focused on mental wellness and life skills development. PHP lasts 6-8 hours per day, five days per week.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): After PHP, you can advance to an intensive outpatient program (IOP). IOP programs include sessions that last about 3-4 hours, however, you’ll only attend your program 3-4 days per week. This allows you to transition back to everyday life and responsibilities while still getting a significant amount of support.

Does Insurance Cover Residential Mental Health Treatment?

FAQ About Residential Treatment

If you’re taking mental health medications, you’ll see a psychiatrist once per week during residential treatment. This will help to monitor the effectiveness of your medications as well as any side effects.

Residential treatment can be a good place to adjust medications or make a change because you’ll have 24/7 support along with a weekly psychiatric appointment.

A typical day in residential treatment is structured and follows a schedule. This schedule will help you stay consistent with your treatment and help you establish a daily routine.

You’ll be required to wake up at the same time each day, although weekends may allow more time in the mornings. Afterward, you’ll get ready for the day—take any medications you need, have breakfast, complete daily hygiene and other chores. Then, you’ll check in with your peers and staff to set an objective for the day.

After that, you’ll start programming. This can include a mix of group sessions and one-on-one time, however, most of your time will be in group settings. Sessions vary from process group therapy and psychoeducation to life skills training and experiential therapy.

You’ll have meal breaks scheduled throughout the day. And, while you’ll have some sessions in the evenings, there is also recreational and free time as well.

Contact our admissions counselors today to get admitted into the program. The admissions counselors will talk to you about your symptoms, diagnoses, current or past experience in treatment, and other pertinent information. You can also talk to your doctor, therapist, or psychiatrist about making a referral to our residential program.

Our admissions counselors will also help you with insurance verification.

We are a licensed and accredited mental health treatment center. This ensures that we are offering evidence-based treatment practices within a safe and healthy environment. Licensure and accreditation also ensure that our staff are highly qualified and properly trained to perform their duties.
