Understanding Mental Health Disorders in Young Adults

Mental health disorders often emerge or intensify during young adulthood, when the brain is still developing and individuals face unprecedented life stressors.

Young adulthood is a time of change and transition. Young adults start to forge their own path in life, gaining independence from their parents. Common changes include forming long-term romantic relationships, parenthood, attending college, working full-time, moving away from one’s hometown, and living on their own.

While these changes are positive, they can also increase a person’s stress levels. This is why underlying mental health disorders often emerge during young adulthood.

Furthermore, some young adults don’t know how to cope with these new stressors. They may engage in maladaptive coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse, disordered eating, isolation, or reckless behaviors. These unhealthy coping mechanisms can lead to developing a mental or behavioral health disorder.

Research shows that 75% of mental health conditions develop by age 24, making this a crucial period for early intervention and treatment.

Common mental health challenges we treat in young adults include:

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders, which may manifest as generalized anxiety, social anxiety, or panic disorder. These conditions often interfere with academic performance, career development, and relationship building.

Depression

Depression is another prevalent concern, sometimes emerging as major depressive episodes or persistent depressive symptoms that impact motivation, energy, and overall functioning.

Trauma-Related Disorders

Many young adults struggle with trauma-related disorders, including PTSD, which may stem from childhood experiences, recent traumatic events, or ongoing stressors. This can also develop into complex-PTSD (C-PTSD) if a person experiences several traumatic events over a period of time.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder often first appears during young adulthood, as a mood disorder – mood episodes that can significantly disrupt education, work, and relationships. Eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder, commonly affect young adults who may be struggling with body image, perfectionism, or control issues.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders, or disordered eating, can begin as a maladaptive response to poor self-esteem or inadequate coping skills for stress.

We treat the following eating disorders at our Los Angeles young adult mental health treatment program:

Our clinical team understands the complex interplay between mental health symptoms and the developmental tasks of young adulthood. We provide comprehensive assessments to identify not only primary mental health concerns but also co-occurring conditions that may be impacting overall functioning and well-being.

Young Adult Mental Health Treatment Programs in Los Angeles

Meadowglade offers a comprehensive continuum of care designed to meet young adults wherever they are in their recovery journey.

Our flexible treatment options allow individuals to step up or step down in levels of care as their needs change, ensuring continuous support throughout the healing process.

1
Residential Treatment
Our residential program provides 24/7 care in a supportive, home-like environment where young adults can focus entirely on their recovery. Our residential program combines intensive individual and group therapy with life skills training, recreational activities, and peer support. Residents live in comfortable accommodations while participating in a structured daily schedule that includes therapeutic programming, meals, and leisure time.
2
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Our PHP offers intensive treatment during the day while allowing young adults to return home or to supportive housing each evening. PHP participants engage in individual therapy, group sessions, family programming, and skill-building activities for six to eight hours daily. This program serves as an excellent step-down from residential care or as intensive treatment for those who have strong support systems at home but need comprehensive daily programming.
3
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
IOP provides structured treatment for young adults who are ready to maintain greater independence while still receiving significant therapeutic support. IOP typically involves three to four treatment sessions per week, focusing on maintaining stability, preventing relapse, and building long-term coping skills. This level of care works well for young adults who are working or attending school while managing their mental health.
4
Outpatient Rehab
Outpatient rehab offers ongoing support through individual therapy, psychiatric services, and periodic group sessions. This level of care supports young adults in maintaining their recovery while fully engaging in work, education, and community life. Our outpatient services provide the flexibility needed for long-term success while ensuring continued access to professional support.
4
Supportive Housing
Supportive housing bridges the gap between treatment and independent living, providing young adults with a structured, sober living environment while they participate in our treatment programs. Our supportive housing options offer graduated levels of independence, allowing residents to practice life skills in a supportive community setting.

How We Serve Young Adults in Los Angeles

The Meadowglade’s treatment approach integrates evidence-based therapeutic interventions with innovative programming designed specifically for young adults. Our multidisciplinary team creates individualized treatment plans that address each person’s unique strengths, challenges, and goals.

We offer the following types of therapies in Los Angeles, CA:

Cognitive-Behavioral
Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most common types of therapy. CBT can treat several types of mental and behavioral disorders by helping you identify the unhealthy thoughts that lead to maladaptive behaviors. Then, your therapist will train you on changing unhealthy thoughts to helpful ones.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) was developed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, DBT is effective at treating other disorders as well. During DBT, you’ll work on improving four crucial skills: (1) mindfulness, (2) emotion regulation, (3) distress tolerance, and (4) interpersonal effectiveness.

Individual
Psychotherapy

Individual psychotherapy or one-on-one counseling is a cornerstone of any mental health treatment plan. This helps you work through issues important to you within a private setting of just you and your therapist. That way, you can discuss sensitive or long-term issues that aren’t appropriate for a group setting.

Group
Therapy

Group therapy is a common form of treatment within a long-term mental health treatment center. All group therapy sessions are led by a trained therapist. However, peers within the group direct the conversation as they provide support for one another as well as feedback and shared experiences.

EMDR
Therapy

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an innovative form of therapy that treats post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD. During EMDR, your therapist will help you process traumatic experiences while inducing you into a state of relaxation. EMDR can also be helpful in treating other mental health disorders.

Psychological
Diagnosis

It’s important to get an accurate diagnosis to determine your course of treatment. That is why we offer testing for your psychological diagnosis to ensure that you’re getting the best help for your symptoms. This will require meeting with a licensed mental health professional to go through a history of your symptoms.

Equine
Therapy

Working with horses provides young adults with immediate, honest feedback about their emotional state and behavior patterns. Horses respond to authentic emotions and energy, helping participants develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills. Through grooming, leading, and interacting with horses, young adults learn about trust, responsibility, and non-verbal communication.

Family
Therapy

Family therapy recognizes that family relationships impact young adult mental health and recovery outcomes. Our family therapy sessions help improve communication patterns, establish healthy boundaries, and address family dynamics that may contribute to mental health challenges. We work with families to understand mental health disorders and support the young adult’s independence.

Holistic
Therapy

Holistic therapy offers ways to treat mental and behavioral health disorders that incorporate the whole-person in treatment. This means that you address all aspects of your well-being—mind, body, and spirit. Common examples of holistic therapy include yoga, mindfulness, and nutritional counseling.

Stress Reduction
Therapy

It’s no secret that stress is a common cause of mental distress and poor coping mechanisms. Chronic stress can cause several problems regarding not only your mental health but your physical health as well. Stress reduction therapy helps you learn your stress triggers and how to reduce them.

Psychiatry +
Medication Management

Psychiatry and medication management can be a valuable part of your treatment program. Medications and psychotherapy are the first line of treatment for mental health disorders. While medications won’t cure your disorder, they can improve your mood and motivation to improve outcomes and treatment retention.

Education &
Career Counseling

Our career counselors work with participants to explore interests, identify strengths, and develop realistic career goals. We help with resume writing, interview skills, and job searching. For those pursuing education, we offer academic coaching, study skills training, and support for managing educational stress.
