The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in the age of people isolating themselves from others to help keep them physically safe. Unfortunately, that triggered symptoms in many people who began to feel tied to being socially isolated.

Several mental health disorders also make people feel safer when they are alone. The Meadowglade offers comprehensive residential and outpatient care that helps people regain their interest in being away from home and among family, friends, and others.

The Meadowglade is a structured program that provides vital support for people who struggle with poor mental health. We include treatment for social isolation and other difficult symptoms to help the person come out from under their symptoms and begin to experience life again.

Our compassionate team of licensed therapists and other clinicians helps walk people back to the light so they can stop being smothered by constantly being alone.

What is Social Isolation?

Social isolation is intentionally staying away from friends, family, and social events.

The individual may have no contact with or support from anyone, leaving them with impaired mental health as a result. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “About 1 in 4 U.S. adults report not having social and emotional support.”

Long-Term Effects of Social Isolation on Mental Health

While a short amount of time being alone can help a person recharge their batteries, when it goes on for too long, social isolation can cause long-term problems.

It can cause a person to develop depression, anxiety, and agoraphobia. Isolating can also contribute to weakening a person’s immune system, high blood pressure, cognitive difficulties, poor cardiovascular function, and interrupted sleep patterns.

Can Social Isolation Cause Depression?

Social isolation can lead to depression because the person begins to feel lonely, unwanted, and unimportant.

The more depressed they are, the less they feel like getting out and seeing people and participating in social events. Conversely, people who have depression often end up socially isolating due to their sadness and lack of motivation to get together with friends and family.

Types of Social Isolation

The term social isolation can cover several actions people take to avoid being around others, such as:

  • Purposefully living alone
  • Avoiding contact with family members and friends
  • Refusing invitations to socialize
  • Going long periods of time without seeing others
  • Spending an inordinate amount of time on solo activities, like watching streaming services, reading, playing video games, and other solo hobbies

An extreme form of social isolation is agoraphobia, which causes a person to avoid leaving the home at all costs due to a fear of being away from what feels like their only safe space.

Social Isolation vs Loneliness

A person can feel lonely because they don’t have close relationships or, if they do, the people are in another area.

They often feel lonely and disconnected from others. The same can be said of those who socially isolate, but the difference is that lonely people are much more willing to seek out friendships and romantic relationships to feel better.

People who engage in social isolation often reach the point where they have lost interest or confidence in trying to become more social. They may have depression that compounds their desire to keep away from others.

How is Social Isolation Treated?

Because social isolation is a symptom of mental health disorders, the treatment comes in the form of addressing the specific disorder.

Treatment of social isolation includes engaging in traditional talk therapy, such as individual psychotherapy and group therapy. It also includes holistic therapy that helps people discover how to heal their mental, physical, and spiritual health at once.

Mental health medications can also help treat symptoms of mental health disorders like depression and anxiety. When the individual feels more relaxed and positive, they are more likely to become socially active again.

Why The Meadowglade?

The Meadowglade offers comprehensive care that we customize to meet each person’s specific needs.

When we know the person, we can treat them well and match them with the right therapy programs to help them begin to heal. This is particularly important for people who feel left out and alone, as our team helps them feel valued and like a partner in their healing program.
