Call Us when you Need Help!
We created a complex PTSD quiz to help people understand if they have this challenging mental health disorder. A series of simple questions helps provide people with the information they need to share with a mental healthcare provider to determine an official diagnosis. From there, a treatment plan can be put into place, and the healing can begin.

Understanding Complex PTSD
When someone endures a traumatic series of events, they often end up developing complex PTSD. This causes them to experience several troubling symptoms that keep them locked in a state of still feeling traumatized. Symptoms include emotional and behavioral ones.
Because it is a relatively new diagnosis, research is ongoing to determine the prevalence of the condition. It is estimated that about 4 out of 100 adults experience CPTSD each year.

CPTSD vs PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) happens after a person experiences a singular traumatic act. Complex PTSD is the result of going through two or more traumatic events.
For example, a person can develop PTSD as a result of being physically assaulted on one occasion. Someone who is assaulted multiple times may develop complex PTSD.
CPTSD Symptoms
Too often, a person doesn’t know that some of the symptoms they experience are related to having complex PTSD.
Common symptoms include:
- Difficulty doing well at work or in school
- Loss of interest in social activities
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Nightmares
- Changes in weight or appetite
- Easily startled
- Avoiding people, situations, or locations that remind the person of the trauma
- Cognitive difficulties
- Memory loss
- Flashbacks
- Withdrawing from loved ones
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Moodiness

These include going through one or more of the following situations:
- Childhood abuse or neglect
- Sexual assault
- Physical assault
- Living in a violent home
- Long-term illness or serious accident
- Military acts
- Community unrest, including neighborhood violence and riots

Diagnosing Complex PTSD
Taking our quiz is the first step in getting a diagnosis for complex PTSD. The results can be discussed with a mental health counselor or one of our admissions counselors.
The clinician will ask the individual to expand on the answers they gave and provide specific information such as the symptoms they endure, their severity, and how long they have felt traumatized. The person can discuss what triggers their symptoms and provide an overview of the traumatic events that occurred.
Finding Treatment for CPTSD in California
The Meadowglade offers several levels of care to help meet the needs of people at all stages of having CPTSD. Upon acceptance into a program, the person will be assessed to determine which type of care will best meet their needs.
Our levels of care include the following:
- Residential: This program provides round-the-clock care for people with severe symptoms of complex PTSD. We provide a modern and comfortable homelike setting that allows them to concentrate on healing.
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Therapy appointments are held for several hours per day on Monday through Friday. This works well for people who have either completed a residential program or do not need one.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Therapy appointments are held for a few hours per day on three to five days each week. This can be the first step in recovery, or a person can enroll in it after attending a residential or partial hospitalization program.
- Outpatient Program: Therapy sessions take place one or two times each week. This is the final step before concluding treatment.
- Young Adult: We designed this program to help young adults who have mental health disorders come together and benefit from an approach designed to target the needs of their age range.
