TRICARE In-Network vs Out-of-Network Coverage
In-network coverage for TRICARE reduces the costs for services compared to out-of-network coverage.
At The Meadowglade, we are in-network to provide mental health treatment under TRICARE insurance plans.
Active duty service members and their families face unique challenges due to the high-risk and increased stress of serving in the Armed Forces. We believe that military service members and their families deserve the best care for these challenges.
Additional benefits of in-network TRICARE coverage include:
- Reduced out-of-pocket costs
- Pre-negotiated rates
- Lower or zero deductible for covered services
In-network coverage also eases the billing process because approved services are already negotiated by the insurer and the provider.
As an in-network provider with TRICARE, The Meadowglade offers the financial advantages of in-network care while providing exceptional treatment services.
Does TRICARE Cover Mental Health Treatment?
TRICARE covers mental health treatment, as mental well-being is essential to your overall health and wellness.
Coverage for mental health treatment includes a variety of evidence-based therapies and services. For coverage to begin, it is important to get a psychological evaluation first. Once you have an official diagnosis from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), you and your provider can begin planning treatment.
The following are evidence-based therapies covered by most insurance providers, including TRICARE:
- Individual Psychotherapy: One-on-one counseling helps you work on issues unique to you and your disorder. You’ll meet with a licensed therapist who specializes in treating your disorder.
- Psychiatry: Psychiatric medications reduce symptoms of mental health disorders. Oftentimes, psychiatry and psychotherapy are the first line of treatment for mental health.
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is among the most common types of evidence-based therapies practiced in mental health. It can treat a variety of conditions and symptoms.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): For those struggling with intense emotions, impulsive control, suicidality, and self-harm, DBT can help you find relief. DBT builds skills in four key areas: (1) mindfulness, (2) distress tolerance, (3) interpersonal effectiveness, and (4) emotion regulation.
- Group Therapy: During group therapy, a trained therapist facilitates a helpful discussion among peers with similar struggles. Participants help one another with peer support, feedback, and shared experiences.
- Family Therapy: Families often struggle when one or more individual members has a mental health disorder. Family therapy helps to rebuild these important relationships.
- EMDR Therapy: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy helps you process traumatic events safely and effectively.
Additional Mental Health Services at The Meadowglade
At The Meadowglade, we also offer a variety of complementary services. These may or may not be included in your insurance plan. However, these services can help you find a unique path to mental well-being and recovery.
The following are additional therapeutic services we provide at our mental health centers in California:
- Equine Therapy: Working with horses can help you develop self-compassion, empathy, patience, and other valuable skills.
- Holistic Therapy: Holistic approaches involve treating the whole-person in recovery. These approaches may include yoga, breathwork, and nutritional counseling.
- Stress Reduction Therapy: This therapy is focused on coping with and reducing stress in your life—a common issue among military members and families.
- Supportive Housing: If you need a safe place to reside following inpatient treatment, supportive housing may be right for you. You can attend outpatient treatment while living among peers in recovery from similar mental health conditions.
- Young Adult Treatment: Young adults often have unique needs during mental health treatment because they face stressors related to several of life’s “firsts.” This can include the first time living on one’s own, living away from their hometown, their first significant break up, etc.
In addition, we’ll help you with career counseling and educational support if needed.
What Types of Mental Health Disorders Does TRICARE Cover?
Service members and their families struggle with stressors that can lead to a variety of maladaptive coping mechanisms and mental health disorders.
One of the most common mental health disorders among service members is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD can develop due to things like stressful living conditions, exposure to violence, physical assault, and sexual abuse.
According to the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry:
- The lifetime prevalence of PTSD in veterans is 8.0%
- 87.0% of veterans reported exposure to at least one potentially traumatizing event (PTE)
- 61.3% of reported PTEs were the sudden death of a loved one
- Sexual abuse in adulthood results in the highest conditional probability of developing PTSD (37.3%)
Furthermore, according to the National Center for PTSD, military sexual trauma (MST) can lead to victims developing PTSD. In a 2018 survey, “6.2% of active-duty women and 0.7% of active-duty men surveyed had experienced sexual assault in the previous year.”
Over time, multiple exposures to traumatic events can lead to complex PTSD (C-PTSD).
We also treat the following mental and behavioral health disorders:
Mental Health Programs Covered by TRICARE
TRICARE covers both short- and long-term mental health treatment programs.
Depending on your treatment needs, you may require intensive, long-term care—especially if you’ve experienced psychosis, suicidality, or a mental health crisis. However, for some, outpatient treatment can be helpful enough.
At The Meadowglade, our mental health programs are considered in-network with TRICARE, and include the following levels of care:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): After residential treatment, many clients step down to a PHP program. PHP programs occur during the day for about 6-8 hours, 5 days per week. This outpatient level of care helps you as you continue your wellness journey.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): IOP programs provide a significant amount of support with a flexible schedule. That way you can resume everyday life while still getting intensive treatment. IOPs have 3-4 hour long sessions for 3-4 days or evenings each week.

Military service can be rewarding and noble, however, service members and their families face stressors the general population do not. Families and spouses are separated by deployments, combat service members are exposed to danger, and female personnel are at an increased risk of sexual trauma.
The Meadowglade is proud to serve active service members and their families covered by TRICARE.
