How do I Know I Need Mental Health Treatment?
Mental health treatment may be needed when you experience persistent emotional changes like prolonged sadness, anxiety, or mood swings that last more than two weeks and interfere with daily life.
Warning signs include changes in sleep or appetite, social withdrawal, difficulty concentrating, decreased performance at work or school, and increased substance use. Physical symptoms like unexplained aches, fatigue, or digestive problems can also signal underlying mental health concerns.
Is Treatment Confidential?
Yes, mental health treatment is confidential under HIPAA privacy laws. However, there are a few legal exceptions where providers must break confidentiality:
- Immediate risk of harm to self or others
- Suspected abuse of children or vulnerable adults
- Court orders
- Insurance billing requirements
- When you provide written consent
