Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Part of the difficulty in recognizing that a person has bipolar disorder is how misunderstood this mental health disorder is, and the confusion about how it manifests. Bipolar disorder is a diagnosable mental illness that is characterized by a person going through cycles of extreme emotional highs and lows.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), “An estimated 4.4% of U.S. adults experience bipolar disorder at some time in their lives.”

The disorder is not curable, but its symptoms can be managed through attending effective treatment that includes therapy and mental health medications. Symptoms of bipolar disorder usually begin during a person’s late adolescence or early adult years.

Signs and Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder causes people to experience a variety of signs and symptoms.

Common signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder include:

  • Manic feelings, including euphoria and elation
  • Massive amounts of energy
  • Depression
  • Hopelessness
  • Moving back and forth between extreme emotional highs and lows
  • Isolating
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Difficulty concentrating on activities or conversations
  • Risky behaviors
  • Racing thoughts
  • Suicidal feelings
  • Abusing alcohol or drugs to deal with bipolar disorder symptoms

Causes of Bipolar Disorder

Whenever someone develops a mental health disorder, they want to know what caused it and whether it could have been prevented.

Bipolar disorder, like other mental illnesses, often has its roots in genetics. When a family member has bipolar disorder, it does not guarantee others in the family will develop it, but it does increase the odds of it happening.

Bipolar disorder can also be triggered due to faulty brain chemistry or when a person experiences a traumatic event. The right treatment program can help delve into what may have spurred the onset of the illness and how to heal unresolved events from the past.

Diagnosing Bipolar Disorder

While our bipolar disorder quiz can provide a jumping-off point to determine if a person has the illness, the quiz alone cannot provide a psychological diagnosis.

The results should be discussed with a mental health expert so an exact diagnosis can be made. A mental health clinician will go over the person’s exact symptoms, the length and severity of them, and how they impact their lives. Once a diagnosis is made, a plan for treatment can be developed.
