What is TriWest Healthcare Alliance?
TriWest Healthcare Alliance partners with the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide veterans with access to high quality healthcare.
TriWest is the regional contractor for the TRICARE West Region. This region includes 26 US states.
In addition, TriWest is also the thirty-party administrator for the VA Community Care Network regions 4 and 5. This region includes 14 states as well as US territories in the Pacific.
The Meadowglade, located in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, in the TRICARE West Region and VA Community Care Network Region 4.
Difference Between In-Network vs Out-of-Network TriWest Coverage
The primary difference between in-network versus out-of-network TriWest coverage is the overall cost for services.
In-network providers have pre-negotiated rates for treatment services. This enables an easier billing process and often results in reduced treatment costs.
The Meadowglade is proud to be in-network with TriWest to provide valuable mental health services to veterans.
Out-of-network coverage, on the other hand, usually costs more than in-network coverage. Still, if you or a loved one need treatment and can only find out-of-network providers, many providers can help to ease the financial burden with payment options and assistance.
Does TriWest Cover Mental Health Treatment?
Yes, TriWest covers mental health treatment for veterans.
Individual coverage can vary, however, since mental health is essential to your overall wellness, mental health treatment is covered by most insurance companies. Many insurance companies require you to first get an evaluation and a diagnosis for mental health treatment coverage.
A psychological evaluation helps to rule out any medical issues that may be the cause of your mental health symptoms. During an evaluation, a mental health professional will provide you with a diagnosis with guidelines from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).
TriWest covers many common, evidence-based therapies including the following:
- Individual Psychotherapy: Getting one-on-one counseling for a mental health disorder is vital to long-term recovery. During individual psychotherapy, a licensed therapist will help you process your emotions and develop coping skills for stress.
- Psychiatry: Psychiatrists are doctors who specialize in treating mental health disorders with medications. Mental health medications reduce symptoms and help you engage in your treatment program.
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Often considered the gold-standard in mental health treatment, CBT helps you challenge unhealthy beliefs that influence your mental well-being.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT helps those struggling with significant emotional distress, self-harm, and impulsivity. This type of psychotherapy was originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD).
- Group Therapy: You can learn a lot from your peers recovering from similar mental health challenges. Group therapy sessions are facilitated by a trained therapist who leads each session.
- Family Therapy: Families of veterans may have disrupted relationships and conflicts due to the stress of military life. Family therapy helps to rebuild these relationships with boundary setting, healthy communication, and conflict resolution.
- EMDR Therapy: For veterans with trauma-related mental health disorders, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy is an innovative—and effective—way to help you process traumatic events.
Complementary Services at The Meadowglade
No two people have the same treatment needs and individualized treatment plans are essential to long-term recovery.
That is why The Meadowglade offers complementary mental health services to help you create a plan that fits your unique needs. While TriWest might not cover these complementary services, they can be a valuable addition to your program.
Our complementary mental health services include:
- Equine Therapy: By working with horses, clients find that they develop skills necessary to improve their mental well-being. These skills include self-confidence, compassion, and a sense of responsibility.
- Holistic Therapy: Holistic approaches focus on the whole-person in mental health treatment. These approaches may include meditation, yoga, breathwork, and nutritional counseling.
- Stress Reduction Therapy: Learning to cope with and reduce stress is vital for veterans. Stress reduction therapy helps you develop healthy coping skills for stress.
- Supportive Housing: It’s important to have a safe and stable place to live during treatment. Our supportive housing program is great for those in outpatient programming who need a healthy place to stay.
What Mental Health Disorders Are Covered by TriWest?
TriWest covers several types of mental health disorders that are common among veterans.
Veterans in general have been exposed to more danger and stressful situations than the general population. In addition, they have dealt with stressors, like moving frequently from one military base to the next and long periods of being away on deployment.
One of the most common mental health disorders among veterans is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
According to the National Center for PTSD, “At some point in their life, 7 out of every 100 Veterans (or 7%) will have PTSD.” When left untreated, PTSD can develop into complex PTSD (C-PTSD).
In addition, veterans may struggle with the following mental health disorders and issues:
- Depression
- Anxiety Disorders
- Bipolar Disorder
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Personality Disorders
- Thought Disorders
- Self-Harm
- Stress-Induced Disorders
- Suicidal Ideation
- Grief Disorder
- Social Isolation
- Eating Disorders
Any mental health disorder when left untreated may lead to chronic health issues, social problems, legal troubles, and, in extreme cases, suicide. Veterans are at an increased risk of suicide due to the stressors they faced during military service.
Veterans Are 1.5 Times More Likely to Die By Suicide Than Non-Veterans
According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, “veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide” than the general population.
Thus, it is important for veterans to seek professional help to cope with stress and mental health issues. At The Meadowglade, we offer several treatment programs for veterans covered by TriWest.
TriWest Mental Health Programs
The Meadowglade offers outpatient mental health treatment for veterans including:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): PHP programs are outpatient programs that offer 6-8 hours of treatment per day for 5 days a week.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): After PHP, many clients step down to an IOP, where they still get significant support, but with a much more flexible schedule and less time in treatment.
